Further Information | An artist's impression of the first people saved from the wreck of the "Tenterden" of Sunderland. On April 2nd 1866, the "Tenterden" was wrecked on the South Pier. The Volunteer Life Brigade of South Shields saved 7 lives including a woman and a baby who were the first to brought ashore from the wreck. This is from an oil painting "Saved!" by John Dawson Watson. It was in the 1871 RA Exhibition. I am trying to find the original, but have not been successful. |
