Further Information | The training ship Wellesley on fire with the paddle steamer Washington alongside. The Tyne Training Ship “Wellesley” was moored on the north side of the Tyne at North Shields. It provided boys with an education and training for a life at sea. The ship could house 300 who were admitted to the school at the age of 12 and discharged at the age of 16. The “Wellesley” was destroyed by fire on March 11th 1914. |
