Three of the statues were veiled, representing night, with the three unveiled statues representing day. Originally costing £73 8shillings each the naked lady statues caused some upset when they were originally erected becoming known as the "South Shields Hussies". The statues were re-sited to Marine Park in 1949 when major alterations to the forecourt took place. Two were returned in 1983 while the other four remained in Marine Park. South Shields Town Hall, was designed by Ernest Fetch and was opened in 1910. |
