| Further Information | St Bede’s Well was on the southern bank of the Bede Burn beside a path leading from Hebburn Red House to Monkton Village. Legend has it that St Bede used the well as a boy, however the site is not deep enough for it to be used for this purpose. In Victorian times the land approaching Bede’s Well was used as a slag heap for Palmer’s blast furnaces. Local people were concerned that the Well would become buried and campaigned for the Well to be protected. Money was raised and work to fence off the Well was carried out in 1932. More recently the slag heap was removed, the area was paved, and the site was made into a park. |
