Further Information | Photograph dated 5th September 1939. The war is two days old. Public toilet block has been protected with sand bags. As part of the air raid precautions the men are digging an underground shelter. There is a trolley bus and a wagon on the right of the Market Place. In the background is St Hilda's church and behind is the pit head for St Hilda's colliery. |
