Further Information | Wartime images by Amy Flagg. The account of bombing raids over South Shields between 1940 and 1943 states that: the last bombs of this disastrous evening (30 September 1941) descended on Mayfair Gardens and Harton Cemetery. In Mayfair Gardens, one fell in a garden on the north side of the houses. There were no casualties, just minor damage to the houses. The second scored a direct hit on two semi detached houses causing extensive damage. The occupants had taken refuge in a concrete shelter and suffered only shock. In the cemetery, one bomb fell at the back of the lodge seriously damaging greenhouses. The other fell in the middle of one of the drives, blocking the road. This caused some delay to vehicles bringing fatalities to the mortuary. |
