Further Information | HMS Satellite, formerly the Brave, an Algerine class minesweeper. Built in Blyth, launched 3rd August 1943.. Post War R.N.V.R. Tyne Division. Renamed the Satellite and moored at Corporation Quay, South Shields. Broken up at shipbreakers yard at Dunston. HMS Brave was towed into the River Tyne about 1951 to take over the duties as Drill Ship of the Tyne Division R.N.V.R. from HMS Melita. Unfortunately she ran aground on the Black Middens on the North side of the river and after a spell of being high and dry she was eventually towed clear. The damage to her hull plates was too extensive to repair by conventional means, and the problem of restoring watertight integrity was effected by pouring tons of concrete into the lower hull by Dowsons of Tyne Dock. This was follwed by a conversion at the firms yard at Tyne Dock. |
