Further Information | The John Bowes, built at Palmers Shipyard in Jarrow, which Charles Mark Palmer had set up. Launched on 30 June 1852 and built for Iron Screw Collier Company. It was the first iron screw collier. This ship revolutionized the North East coal trade when it was declining. It wasn't until the Herald was 81 that her days came to an end when she sprang a leak and foundered off the coast of Spain. |
