Further Information A footbridge near the Tyne Tunnel at Jarrow was left close to collapse after an HGV lorry smashed into it. Emergency teams of engineers worked through the night to make the bridge safe after it was knocked off its supports by the HGV truck which was carrying an excavator at 7.00 pm on 23 November 1987. Engineers said the cost of replacing the bridge, built over the Lindisfarne Island only a year ago, would run into tens of thousands of pounds.
