Further Information | Removal of the Ballast Hills, man made features of discarded ship's ballast, which was usually loose stone. The unwanted ballast material was stored and transported here by a small railway, one of which ran from near St. Hilda's Colliery. The stone ballast came into disuse when ships began to have use water as ballast, which could be pumped in or out as required. |
