Further Information Removal of the Ballast Hills, man made features of discarded ship's
ballast, which was usually loose stone. The unwanted ballast material
was stored and transported here by a small railway, one of which ran
from near St. Hilda's Colliery. The stone ballast came into disuse
when ships began to have use water as ballast, which could be pumped in
or out as required.
