Further Information | Together with the picture there is the write up as follows:- "On the left the original line of Wapping Street, and to the right is the formation of the curve of the set back. The oldest thoroughfare in South Shields is being set back for the purpose of shipyard extension. It is Wapping Street, and at that point where Fairless Steps led up to the town, the steps have been blocked up, and the street diverted in a curve. It was here that the once famous Stanhope Drops (Coal Spouts) stood, known to mariners the world over, and up Fairless Steps have stalked ashore famous sailors of bygone days. Many stories centre round the place touching the doings of the press gangs, etc. The pillars - sentinels of the old Drops - still remain." |
