Further Information | H.M.S. Agincourt Football Team, Cup winners 1915, 1916, 1917. The Agincourt had an interesting history. Originally built at Armstrong's for the government of Brazil, it was to be called the Rio de Janeiro. The Brazilian Government sold the ship to Turkey before taking delivery during 1914. Renamed the Sultan Osman 1st , delivery was further delayed because the Turks were known to be sympathetic to Germany. When war broke out the ship was transferred to the Royal Navy and renamed HMS Agincourt, although throughout its service it was better known as the Gin Palace HMS Agincourt joined the 1st Battle Squadron of the Grand Fleet in time to take part in the battle of Jutland where it escaped unscathed. The ship was finally scrapped in 1922. |
