Further Information Paddle Tug Eppleton Hall, pictured at Harrisons, Bill Quay, preparing for voyage to America. Scott Newhall at Wheel-House Door. The Eppleton Hall was built in 1914 by Hepple & Co., South Shields for Lambton Collieries Ltd on the River Wear. The tiny 166 ton vessel was saved from the breakers when she was purchased by wealthy American Newspaper Executive Scott Newhall. After having her practically rebuilt at Harrisons, Bill Quay, with her under new owner as skipper, his 11 man crew and under her own steam, she left the Tyne on 18 September 1969 at the start of her 9,000 mile voyage to the San Francisco Maritime Museum. On 24 March 1970, six months and six days out of England, the Eppleton Hall puffed under the Golden Gate bridge to a hero's welcome of spouting fireboats, signal cannons, boat horns and brass bands.
