Further Information | Picture of tug Hercules attending a vessel (thought be the The War Nawab) after launch from Palmers Shipbuilding Yard in Hebburn. In between the Hercules and ship is the Paddle Tug Conqueror. At that time these two tugs were the most powerful paddle tugs operating on the River Tyne having 34ins cylinders, some 4ins in diameter, larger than the Eppleton Hall. The Conqueror had been a River Thames passenger boat and was bought by the Redhead Tug Company of Newcastle upon Tyne. Because of her length, 120ft, she was slow in maneuvering but very useful for a long straightforward tow. She operated on the River Tyne until about 1955 when she was sold to Clayton Davies as scrap. |
