Further Information | Paddle tug Oscar (Ridley) in Richardson and Brocks Wooden Dock, c1924. On right is Wardles Timber Yard. Wooden Dock was in commission over 70 years. Broken up c1928. Wooden flooring floating dock, built 1854 has just left Shields to be broken up. It was said to be the oldest floating dock in the world and over 2,000 vessels, including the older collier brigs have been docked on it. About 1860 the dock was stationed at the north side of the Tyne. During a gale it broke its moorings and drifted to the south side with a vessel on it. It has remained at the south side until it was sent away a few days ago. From the Gazette Friday 10 August 1928. |
