Further Information | The Training Ship HMS Wellesley, at North Shields, was for orphan, foundling or poor, destitute boys, was first established at North Shields Bouys in 1868, when the frigate Cornwall was lent by the Admiralty; she was found to be inadequate. In 1873 the Cornwall was replaced by Boscawen a former ship of the line and renamed Wellesley. HMS Boscawen was built at Woolwich and launched in April 1844. Wellesley was destroyed by fire on the 11.3.1914, when she had on board 240 boys aged between 12 and 16. The training they received was for the merchant service. After the fire the boys were accommodated in the Aquarium at Tynemouth, later known as the Plaza. Finally a shore establishment was created at Blyth and the figure-head of Wellesley dominated the entrance. |
