Further Information | Smith's Dock Company Limited, South Shields. Founded by the Wallis family in the 1770's. In 1790 their successors were Messrs. Nicholson, Horn and Blenkinsop. Early in the 19th century it was Straker and Company. In 1830 George Straker put his son-in-law, James Edward of Dublin in charge of the dock. In 1856 his son, Harry Smith Edwards took over and the firm progressed rapidly for many years. In 1899 they amalgamated with Smith's Dock Co. Ltd, North Shields. |
