| Further Information | Trincomalee. This ship, one of the only two ex-sailing frigates still afloat in this country was laid down at Bombay Dockyard in May 1816 and launched on 19 October 1817. She was not commissioned until 1847 after being reduced to a Sixth Rate of 26, later 24, guns. Her dimensions were 150 1/2 x 40 1/2 feet with a tonnage of 1,066 giving her a displacement of 1,447 tons. She was laid up at Portsmouth for 25 years and after being re-armed as a Sixth Rate, was commissioned in July 1847 for the North America and West Indies Station. From June 1852 she served in the Pacific for four years, then was laid up at Chatham until being selected in January 1861 for service as a RN Reserve Drill Ship at Sunderland. She moved to West Hartlepool in 1863 and later to Southampton Water where she remained until 1897. On 19 May of that year she was sold for scrap to J Read who resold her to become the training ship Foundroyant. Under this name she can still be seen in Portsmouth Harbour. thirty two similar frigates were built between the years 1800 and 1830. |
