Further Information | Mauretania leaving the Tyne in 1907. Note on the North Pier: Owing to violent storms, following a breach in the pier in the late 190s a scheme was drawn up for constructing a new straight outer length of 1500 ft. in continuation of the straight inner portion of the existing structure. The contract had provided for the installment on the new roundhead of the old lighthouse, the lantern of which displayed three fixed lights of different colours: one above the other, but as the work progressed it was thought desirable to have a flashing white light of greater power and height. A foghorn was also desired to give a more far-reaching warning than the bell installed in the South Pier Lighthouse. A new lighthouse was accordingly constructed and the old one demolished on completion in 1908. |
