Further Information | CHANTS 60 and 61: were tankers completed at John Redheads and Sons Ltd 04/1944. A chant was a shortened version of channel tanker. These were types of prefabricated coastal tankers. A total of 28 prefabricated sections were made up into a ship. These were assembled on a road between 2 slipways. EMPIRE FRANKIN: Built 06/1941 at Redhead's as cargo ship.Soon after completion converted to a CAM (Catapult Aircraft Merchantman) ship. Equiped with a Hawker Hurricane fighter that could be launched but not recovered Broken up 1967. Used to shoot down German aircraft that were shadowing convoys & homing in U-Boats |
