Further Information | The Floating Hospital. In the 1870's cholera was prevelant and on the formation of the Port Sanitary Authority, a floating hospital was stationed at Jarrow Slake. The first hospital was the old ferry boat 'Durham'. She proved inadequate and c1883 the galliot 'Alliance' was moored alongside the ferry. Two years later they became unfit for use and in August 1886 the hospital in the photograph was launched. It was built by Messrs Wood, Skinner and Co, Bill Quay. Eventually with the improved watch kept on the health of crews of incoming ships and the establishment of smallpox hospitals ashore, the Floating Hospital was quiet and almost unused. Finally she was declared redundant and in 1930 was dismantled. The photograph also shows a view across to North Shields. |
