Further Information | Pan Jack, of the Coal Hole, to quote his title in full, was, by way of proffession "a gentleman of the road". He never slept under the roof of a home, if there was a stable or outhouse accessible, and there usually was. He had a wonderful scent for outhouses, and in the summer he took his night's repose in the open field. At some part of the day you would meet him in his wanderings on the King's Highway. He made a daily pilgrimage to Newcastle and back, occasionally varing his intinerary to pick up Sunderland and incidentally the spare copper of all whom he solicited and were disposed to give. He was rather neatley groomes, carried a fine carrage, and deported himself well. Vagrancy was worth doing well if at all; and Pan Jack invested it with much dignity these respects. And tradition says he did it well. |
