Further Information | Black and white photograph showing a group of actors based in Zion Hall, Laygate, South Shields, taking part in a production of the Merchant of Venice.This production company was probably the Green Cards, named after the colour of the unemployment card at the time. Zion Hall was a venue for a host of other activities aimed at the unemployed of the town. The play was a Pageant play performed by the South Shields Unemployed Drama Group in the grounds of Undercliffe, Cleadon, the home of Col. Robert Chapman and Mrs Chapman. Colonel Chapman was the the President of the South Shields Unemployed Committee at the time. The play was directed by Mr Gordon Lea. |
