| Further Information | Corn had been milled on this site since the 16th century. A post windmill was built in 1779 but was blown down in strong gales to be replaced by the tower windmill in 1790. It was operational until 1896, when steam- powered mills to over. South Tyneside Council took over the building in 1960, and had completely refurbished it by 1992. |
