Further Information | Turks Head public house, on Greens Place, at the top of Pilot Stairs. Pilot Stairs have been realigned following the building of River Drive, 1939/40, and the Turks Head is now demolished. A tunnel used to run from Pilot Stairs, underneath the houses to St Stephen's graveyard. The tunnel was used as an air raid shelter during the war and children used to play in there - though not near the graveyard. Boz Whitaker reported that there were mosaics in the tunnel - possibly Roman. |
