| Further Information | The Grotto had a colourful early history first occupied in the late 18th or early 19th century. Was purchased in 1849, by a local South Shields politician, then owned by Harton Coal Company. In 1898 Vaux Brewery took over the running of the building, finally purchasing it in 1938. The brewery ran the pub until 1999 and has a succession of owners since, with long periods of vacancy in between occupancy. |
