| Further Information | In the 1960s this was just a back lane but in the early years of the 1800s Queen Street echoed to the trundling of wheels and the clip clop of horses' hooves as the coaches of the Royal Mail ended their journeys at the stables of the Golden Lion Hotel. The first hotel in the town offering accommodation to travellers, the Golden Lion was kept for many years by the Oyston family. "In its snug, old fashioned parlour" wrote local historian G B Hodgson, "the shipowmers and retired skippers of the period met nightly to discuss their politics and their liquor". The above photograph shows the rear portion of the Golden Lion as it was during the 1930s. |
