| Further Information | St. Stephen’s Church in Mile End Road was first proposed at a Town Hall meeting in 1838, as the population in the east of Shields was growing very quickly. Foundation- stone laid on 26th December 1844 (St. Stephen’s Day) and consecrated on October 13 1846. Stone built in the Early English style; seating available for 610. There were Sunday and day schools erected on the land adjoining. Known as the “ Pilots Church” as a great number of the Tyne pilots were buried in the church’s graveyard. |
