| Further Information | By the early part of the 18th Century, Shields was a large village noted as a salt producing centre. In 1768 the plan of the present street pattern began with the development of a market place and the erection of the old Town Hall, as it became, comprising tuscan arcades, centred over an old central pillar, probably a market cross and was used for its original purpose until 1910. |
