Further Information | This watch tower was erected by Master and Brethen of Trinity House, Newcastle c1810 for the Tyne Pilots, most of whom lived in the area. The tower provided a good vantage point to see ships sailing towards the River Tyne. Note the anchor on the tower which bears a motto in Latin-in Arms- DEUS DABIT VELA -God will give the sails. Also note the crenellation on the top of the circular tower and adjoining building. Behind the tower, the terrace of houses are in Lawe Road. See also image STH0002826 |
