| Further Information | Controversial demolition of part of the Town Hall, the single story building was pulled down as part of the scheme to erect the £5 million four story extension. It followed a public enquiry at which preservation societies lodged objections to the scheme though none attended the meeting. The Secretary of State for the Environment decided that the single story section was an "afterthought". It did not fit in with the magnificence of the rest of the Town Hall. |
