Further Information This is a photograph of one of the Tyne Dock Arches of which there were several. Each of the arches comprised of three tiers each with a specific purpose. The top two tiers were laid out with railway tracks
used to transport coal in wagons from the coalfields to the River Tyne. The tracks ended at the staithes from which point the coal was unloaded and transported down river to the North Sea. The lowest arch was in each instance a road-tunnel enabling vehicular access to and from South Shields. The photograph was taken shortly before the demolition of the bridges.
