| Further Information | The Tyne Navigation Bill and the Conservancy Bill were passed into law as the Tyne Improvement Act on 15th July 1850. The Act removed sole control of the management of the River Tyne away from Newcastle and gave it to a Commission that was representative of the whole of Tyneside. South Shields had three representatives on the Commission. The Act allowed the towns along the Tyne to benefit from dues levied on commerce on the river and from improvements made to it. There was great tension between Newcastle and the other areas whilst the Bills were going through Parliament. |
