Further Information The War Memorial was erected in front of Palmer Memorial Hospital, Jarrow by the Directors and Shareholders of Palmer’s Shipbuilding and Iron Company to record their appreciation of the patriotism of 1,543 men from the Jarrow and Hebburn Works who served in the Great War 1914-19. It was unveiled in 1921 in front of a crowd of more than 5,000 people. The statue of Sir Charles Mark Palmer, designed by Albert Toft, was erected in 1903. It was unveiled on January 30th 1904 by Lady Palmer. It originally stood outside of the Palmer Memorial Hospital on Clayton Street, Jarrow before being moved to Jarrow Riverside during the 1980s and 1990s. The statue now stands opposite the Jarrow Town Hall on Grange Road, Jarrow.
