| Further Information | St Paul’s Monastery was founded by Benedict Biscop in 681AD and was built on land granted by King Egfrid. The monastery was dedicated in 685AD. Renowned monk and scholar the Venerable Bede lived and worked at the monastery from its opening until his death in 735AD. The monastery continued in various forms throughout the middle ages until it was disbanded during the dissolution of the monasteries in 1537. A parish church remained on the site. The original church was demolished and replaced in the Eighteenth Century. It was further rebuilt and extended in 1866 and is the St Paul’s Church which can be seen today. The remains of the monastery have been excavated and can be seen beside the church. |
